Shaun Clowes Analyzes Cognition Labs’ Devin & Reddit’s IPO
We are joined by guest co-host Joff Redfern, Fareed Mosavat, and our guest Shaun Clowes. Today, we dive into two major stories: Devin and Reddit.
Let's kick things off with Devin.
🤖 Devin: The Future of Programming or Just Another Tool in the Box? 🧰
This week, Cognition Labs released a video showcasing it’s AI Coder, Devin. Devin promises to be able to handle complex programming tasks with the autonomy that you’d expect from a human coder. We thought it was worth diving into this new offering and delivering some Unsolicited Feedback.
🚀 Ambitious Founders With Big Ideas
Devon's founding team is a powerhouse of programming competition winners. They've tackled a problem that has stumped many: the planning step in AI programming. They claim to have built a system that can handle high-level task planning, a game-changer if true.
📊 We Appreciate the Honesty in Their Numbers
Devon's announcement stated it successfully completed 15% of tasks. That may sound small, but that's more than double any competitor. 15% can provide real efficacy to a product team, but we’re trying to understand where it can go from here. Is the journey from 15% to 60% a one-year journey or a five-year journey? 🧭
💡The Secret Sauce Is In The Planning
GBT can write working code. Other LMMs can get pretty close as well. The thing these tools can’t do is plan out the steps needed to get from idea to finished project. We think Devin’s team has unlocked something truly special in the ability for the AI to plan its way though a task.
🤔 As Devin Develops, It Comes a Range of Implications
🎓 The Learning Curve: If AI takes over the 'grunt work' of programming, how will new programmers learn and grow? Will we end up with fewer developers and less sophisticated business thinkers because the middle ground doesn't exist anymore? The reason large companies hire junior employees is not efficiency - it’s apprenticeship. 🎢
🌍 A New World of Possibilities: Fareed is thrilled that next time he builds a project, maybe the set-up time won’t take 4 hours 🤣. Jokes aside, at minimum, a tool like Devin could could give a massive head-start or helping hand to product leaders. But, the real win is this could democratize programming, allowing more people to build products and solve complex problems. 🌐
🎯 The Power of Prototyping: If you're a product manager or engineer, focus on building great prototypes. Tools like Devin unlock prototyping for more people. Prototypes are more powerful than product specs. So, let's build more and write less! 🛠️
✨ A Moment of Inspiration - The Unknown Unknowns
AI is great at known knowns. But what about the unknown unknowns? That's where the cool stuff is. That's where we need to focus our efforts. These are the areas where human creativity really shines. The introduction of AI doesn't mean the end of human input - it means we have more tools at our disposal to tackle problems in new and innovative ways.
The Pending Reddit IPO: A Deep Dive into the Power of Community and the Potential of Monetization 🚀
Reddit, the front page of the internet, is finally going public and we have thoughts.
For absolute clarity, it is important to note that neither the podcast content nor this summary constitutes investment advice.
Let’s dive in.
💰 Reddit Needs To Close A Stark Monetization Gap
With $804 million in revenue and a 20% year-over-year growth rate, Reddit is no small player. In this macroeconomy, 20% isn’t too shabby as a growth rate. Let’s now explore areas where Reddit could accelerate over time.
Top of our mind - Reddit's monetization potential is massive. Reddit has a unique personalized ad inventory that isn't available in other places. There's a huge opportunity to increase the average revenue per user, which supposedly stands at a relatively low $3.42, a far cry from Facebook's reported whopping $68. If Reddit can close this gap, it could unlock a tremendous business opportunity.
We want to understand why hasn't this happened yet. Is it a format problem, a sales issue, or is Facebook just too good to compete with? 🤷♂️
🌐 Leaning Into Power of Community
Reddit's strength lies in its vibrant communities. It's a bastion of human-generated, high-value content in an internet increasingly filled with machine-generated noise. The platform's charm lies in its authenticity and the sense of community it fosters. Each subreddit has its unique flavor and identity, making it a content-driven platform that feels like the community runs the show.
The counterpoint here is that, for the first time in a while, Reddit seems to have found a competitor as Discord attracts very specific communities to its platform. However, Reddit's network effects and the inertia of its giant flywheel make it hard to break.
👥 The Power of the Moderators
Moderators are the backbone of Reddit, curating and managing the platform's numerous communities. They're the ones who keep the conversations relevant and the communities thriving. In recognition of their role, Reddit is allowing moderators to participate in the IPO. Smart move, Reddit! It will go a long way to align incentives, but we’re still not convinced it will be enough to keep moderators from resisting changes that a publicly-traded Reddit may seek to make.
🏡 Closed Gardens: A Future Possibility? 🏡
Platforms such as LinkedIn, Yelp, and OpenTable have traditionally relied on SEO to boost user engagement, subscriptions, and ad revenue. Yet, the emergence of AI solutions poses new challenges by providing answers that were once exclusive to these platforms' content. This begs the question “why would I put something on the open internet?” As a result, some of these content powerhouses may transform into 'closed gardens,' prioritizing the protection of their unique content and user data.
It seems Reddit is already ahead of the curve here…
🤖 Reddit’s Paving The Way In AI Monetization 🤖
Reddit's data is a goldmine for AI training, but with a multi-million dollar deal with Google, Reddit is leveraging its user-generated content to build AI algorithms. It's a clear indication that direct payments and partnerships could be the solution to the "why would I put something on the open internet" question.
So, would you buy, sell, or hold on Reddit? 📈📉 While we can't predict the future, it's hard to bet against a company with strong network effects and highly engaged communities.
