Listen on

This week, Brian and Fareed had a chat where Brian shared some interesting products he's come across. Together, they uncovered a few key takeaways. You can check out Brian's demo of the products here or explore them on your own.

During the conversation, we discussed:

  • Vercel’s v0.dev: a tool that generates UI components for you and allows for quick iterations.

  • Napkin.ai: a solution that transforms texts into visuals or frameworks.

  • Strut.so: an all-in-one AI workspace designed specifically for writers, offering some truly unique features.

However, it's important to note that these three products are not equal. We believe products like v0.dev and Napkin are positioned for success in ways Strut is not...

🎯 v0.dev & Napkin.ai are pioneering a new approach: “Generation First” 🎯

They're turning the traditional AI integration process on its head. Instead of forcing AI into existing workflows, they're starting with AI generation and seamlessly adding lightweight workflows on top.

The outcome? Swift iteration and effortless export to your preferred finishing tool. Experience the power of this innovative workflow today!

This is a stark contrast to traditional tools like Notion or Adobe that have already drawn the box of their workflow and let users do all of the creation within this existing box.

🔄 v0.dev & Napkin are built for constant iteration 🔄

Iteration is the name of the game. AI tools that allow for rapid, efficient iteration cycles can unlock new ways of working and doing things. It's about moving forward, learning, and improving with each cycle. 🔄

Like we talked about with Nabeel, quality matters. Tools that focus on generating high-quality results first can create stickiness, buying time to layer on workflow features. And, while AI’s thought and memory capabilities remain constrained, a great approach to getting to quality is through iteration.🌟

📦 Strut, while it has cool features, stuck with the status-quo of “Environment First” 📦

On the flip side, some tools require users to replace their entire workflow to access a few cool features. The challenge? These features will likely be copied by existing players over time and it’s really hard to get people to change their entire workflow just for a few features, unless the product is incredibly niche.

Unfortunately, Strut falls into this trap while trying to attract the masses. While their features are interesting, it's hard to imagine many people abandoning Notion, Google Docs, etc., just for these features. In all likelihood, Notion will catch up at some point.

🤔 The Takeaway 🤔

The future of AI tools lies in the balance between improving generation and enhancing environments.

If you want to go “environment first” you have to create a tool that is 10x+ better for a very specific user group, rather than trying to be slightly better for everyone. Without both components, it’s hard to envision it working.

For most products, we take inspiration from starting with high-quality foundations and then layering on streamlined workflows to iterate rapidly. If the quality remains strong over time, products like Midjourney will naturally develop strong user engagement.
