This goal tracker board helps us monitor the progress of our quarterly goals and team metrics. Prior to implementing this, we'd sometimes find ourselves halfway through the quarter before we knew it, and there'd be a sudden rush of panic about the progress the team had achieved. To address this, we created this simple visual representation of our progress and incorporated it into our weekly meetings and our Slack channel to ensure that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The most challenging part of the board is ensuring that the information is updated consistently. I handle the team goals, quarter slide, and metrics myself, while each team member is responsible for updating their own individual goals. Beyond metrics, which are set at the beginning of every month, the cadence for updates is 2 weeks, though if a goal is reached, we typically go ahead and update the board whenever that happens, just to close the loop.

Since data has to be input manually, it's all about developing a habit to regularly update our progress as we move forward with our tasks.

Since the team prefers to process information visually, the vibrant colors and the visual progress sliders are helpful when it comes to quickly pinpointing areas that require attention. Having such a clear view of things makes it much easier to ask for, or offer, assistance where it’s needed; we’re really trying to foster an environment where people are proactive in reaching out to offer support where it’s needed to hit our metrics and goals.

Plus, sometimes our goals shift or turn out to be a little too ambitious from the get-go. Having them displayed openly allows us to analyze any lag and decide if we need to recalibrate or postpone them to a later time.

If a team member isn't meeting their goals, I'll also try to address it in our 1:1s and see how I, or other teammates, can allocate some of the time or assist them and offer proactive support.

Fortunately, my team hasn't faced this, but having such a clear view would also be useful in pinpointing areas where we might need more training or addressing performance issues (e.g., maybe person X wasn't the right one to do task Y).
