We recently started using Asana for our roadmap, and it has made such a huge difference. Before Asana, we used ProductBoard's roadmap feature. It wasn't flexible enough for us and because only the Product team had access to it, it felt very isolated. With Asana, the roadmap is now accessible to any team within 2 clicks because everyone already uses it for their daily to-dos, sprint planning, and meeting agendas.

It took only a few hours to migrate the roadmap for the past year. However, creating the format that actually worked for us took a couple of weeks. We had to go through a few sprints and different ways of structuring the roadmap until we arrived at this one - which works really well so far.

We broke each feature down into 3 parts (Research - green, Design - purple, and Development - orange) to bring more transparency around the product development process to the rest of the company. Colour-coding is super useful to be able to quickly scan the roadmap.

The visual layout also makes it easy to see team capacity and how we allocate resource to work on certain initiatives. Some features might involve more front-end work while others might be back-end heavy, and we sequence and overlap tasks strategically.

When a roadmap item is done, we "complete the task" and this makes the colour fade out. This is handy to scan what's being actively worked on.
