A mentor and coach inspired me to create this document when I was at a career crossroads. They encouraged me to identify what aspects of my role were fulfilling and energizing so that I could better articulate my unique skill set, interests, and values. This document gave me a structured way to think about the WHAT (what is my ideal role and why) and made the HOW easy because it streamlined my thoughts and provided specific paths.

Creating this document resulted in two actions for me:

I took charge of my career path at a large enterprise in light of org changes.

I prioritized informational meetings within a large enterprise and external opportunities aligned with my interests, strengths, and goals.

To begin filling this out, I first tackled every other section in discussions with my mentor. Then I synthesized into this single sentence, and iterated on everything until I was happy with it. It was very empowering to have this concise description of my ideal role in the end.

My current role had started to expand to include these areas, but I was stretched. It did not feel attainable in the immediate term because the current role's need was heavily focused on operational excellence and execution, resulting in thought leadership, governance, and innovation taking a backseat.

In the Gallup Clifton Strengths assessment, "Maximizer" showed up as one of my biggest strengths. The Maximizer talent theme describes people committed to individual and group excellence. They focus on what is good and seek to transform it into something great. They are also solution-oriented and willing to go to great lengths to preserve their vision and energy.

This description really resonated with me. I would describe my leadership style as a combination of servant leadership (supporting by being in the weeds and being a stable shoulder the team can use to aim/fire their goals) and inspiring / encouraging leads to take big swings and providing psychological safety.

This wasn't just a thought exercise. I had asked all my colleagues this question in 360 reviews.

With the areas of growth that you are interested in, a smaller company that provides the autonomy to think of digital marketing at a larger scale would be ideal.
