This is a behind-the-scenes look at how we put together million-view YouTube videos at OkDork. Before we even begin recording, we want to think through how we're going to package and produce this video so that we win in this topic or category.

Title and thumbnail are two of the most important drivers of views on YouTube, besides the topic itself. We spend a lot of time on these. We often have a dedicated designer and take lots of custom photos for thumbnails. For every video, we have lots of backup titles and thumbnails in case the CTR (clickthrough rate) is lower than our benchmark. 5% is what we're striving for.

The team for a video like this is typically myself, a designer, and a researcher. The researcher synthesizes all the background info here so that I can prep for an effective interview.


A document like this becomes a template for us if the video doesn't end up doing well. If it doesn't get a million views, why and what can we learn? We'll look at average view duration, CTR, or even topic to see whether that's a factor for our audience. We used to make 3 videos a week on all types of topics, but we found that by narrowing in on particular topics (especially millionaires) and uploading fewer videos with higher production value, we saw better results.

The goal of the videos we create is to inspire underdogs to take action in their businesses. So with every single video we release, we ask, "How does this help an underdog?" it needs to be educational and aspirational. This is the title we ended up going with that we felt captured our unique brand the best.

Pejman was an illegal immigrant with a single mother, no money, without formal education. Had to beg the manager of McDonalds to let him clean floors for $3/hr.

Age 18-25 - was a banker. Executive VP by age 23.

Age 22 - made his first million by flipping builders lots. Bought lots at $5k deposit each from new home developers well before those communities started building or selling. A year later, would sell the lots to people in line, willing to pay $50k or $100k premiums from the builders. Would sell for $10-20k less than what the builder was asking. Ie. he was flipping $5k for $40-70k. No need for loans on actual property. Did this 72 times before they caught on. The sales centers put his photo at the back of their buildings so that no one would ever sell to him again.

Bought a Porsche 911 Turbo at age 21, followed by a Lamborghini Gallardo at 23, and every year since have owned different exotics and at times many simultaneously.

Got into exotic car detailing and customizing, evolved the business into buying exotics from dealers who were distressed in 2007.

Had $2.6M saved, and during recession, bought inventory of distressed luxury cars and assets. Sold assets to wealthy clients from the bank, but kept the assets for them in storage. This became the first alternative luxury fund.

Self-made entrepreneur, philosopher, author and the creator of the wealth transfer methodology.

His companies have grossed well over $420M in combined revenue.
