Our in-app AI subject line generator was proving highly useful to customers, but it was limited in its reach as it could be accessed only by product users. It could only help increase user stickiness and provide value to those who were already using the product. But we believed it could be valuable as a customer acquisition and growth tool as well.

 We picked up the in-product tool features and built on top of it. Our designer and marketing team brainstormed to create a public-facing UI/UX along with implementing some rigorous testing at the prompt side. The in-app AI Subject line generator uses email template and campaign data to enrich the context offered to the AI generator, but this was not possible in the public version. So we decided to add parameters that can capture this information without making it a multi-input submission. Our goal was to minimize effort on the user’s part, while churning out the best subject line possible. Once the prompt engineering was sorted, we built the first version and tested it internally. The next step was launching it in the market. We chose Product Hunt as the right place to announce this tool to the marketing community.

To achieve this goal, we needed to create a sign-up nudge at an appropriate stage during the user journey. We knew the most warmed-up users would be the ones who used the tool and found it helpful, so we decided to show a pop-up sign-up prompt as soon as the user reached a certain number of uses. We wanted to ensure that users spent a reasonable amount of time getting value from the feature before being asked to sign up for Mailmodo, so it was essential to find a good balance between keeping the public version genuinely useful and directing users to Mailmodo after a certain number of trials. We started at 15 generations/day and quickly realised that most folks didn’t hit the limit. After looking at the usage data, we learned that 5 generations was the average number of trials by users, and that also intuitively seemed reasonable to get multiple good variations of subject lines from OpenHigher AI. Hence, we converted it to 5 trials before showing the sign-up prompt.

Some things that we could have done better and will take care of in the future launches: 

Setting aside one week for internal testing and getting beta user feedback before launch.

Having co-marketing partners on board to make the distribution network wider. 

Other than this, we learned that solving a customer problem in a genuine way by going deep into the fundamentals is more important than creating an amazing UI or breadth of features.

To drive new product sign-ups, we released a version of our in-app AI tool to the public for free.

2023 has been the year of AI. It has revolutionized every aspect of modern workflow, including email marketing. We realised we could help email marketers get better results in less time if we integrated AI at the right stages of the email production process — writing subject lines being the most important.

We built an AI Subject Line and Preheader Generator inside our product, Mailmodo, to help email marketers overcome writer’s block, find good inspirations, and boost their efficiency. The benefit of this tool was clear based on the usage and customer feedback.

. As a result, we decided to open our well-received AI Subject Line and Preheader Generator to the public, including non-customers. For the launch, we named it OpenHigher AI, a play on the trending movie and, of course, the value proposition of better open rates. OpenHigher AI is 

the public version of Mailmodo’s in-app AI Subject Line and Preheader Generator.

We built OpenHigher AI to showcase Mailmodo’s AI capabilities with a goal 

. Through this tool, users could actually try out the Mailmodo AI and decide for themselves if they wanted to access the rest of the AI features in the product. For us, this generator is a foot-in-the-door product marketing resource.

A secondary goal is to implement the learnings from this tool inside the product to improve the quality of subject lines there.

We targeted to get 100+ signups from the tool launch, and we achieved 20% of it in a week. The distribution is ongoing, and we hope to make more progress in the coming weeks. Other than that we are also looking at the event data, including the type of subject lines generated, and we will use the same to enrich the results in our product over time.
